If Schochet supplies the history, Noah McGuinness supplies the method. His conviction is that you do not have to choose between building better machines and running them better. You have to do both at once.

The retrofit philosophy is his. A brand-new autonomous machine is a research project that ships in years. A retrofitted excavator is a product that ships now, because the hardest, most expensive part, the machine itself, already exists and already works. TerraFirma’s job is the layer on top: perception, planning, control, and the software that lets one operator orchestrate several machines at once.

That last part is where the economics turn. When one operator can run multiple machines, per-operator effectiveness climbs; the company reports gains of up to 300 percent. The seat in the cab was never the valuable thing. The judgment of the person in it was, and judgment scales when you free it from a single joystick.

It is a systems argument, not a gadget argument. The machine, the mission software, the command room and the crew are one instrument, and you tune the whole instrument or you tune nothing.
